The video,What is a Nurse Scientist? was submitted to the 30th Annual Telly Awards.

This video received 2 Bronze Telly Awards:
One for Art Direction and One for Editing.

Total Telly's received to date: five.

Dream Makers 2009: Hits Million Dollar Milestone

The Dream Makers Scholarship program has reached a Million Dollar Milestone this year. Now in it's 8th year, the scholarship program awards undergraduate students $1,000 scholarships based strictly on GPA. No application is required to be eligible, but students must have completed one semester of nursing school and attend the luncheon on March 9th where they will be seated with their donor. Approximately 25% of undergraduate students receive one of these scholarships each year.

Last year, I operated a video camera. This year, I operated the switch board, aka; technical director. I also created the name slates, edited the final piece, and authored the DVD's.

Project Oprah: From Bedside to Nationwide

The background story on this video
A group of students asked our department to help them tape a video addressing the nursing shortage. They wanted to send the video to the Oprah Winfrey show in hopes of being interviewed by Oprah.

With no script or rehearsal, I turned the camera on and let the students tell their story. One after the other, they shared their sincere concern about the state of our nations nursing shortage.

We have not heard anything from the Oprah show, however my supervisor encouraged me to submit the video to the 2008 Telly Awards. I did and I was surprised when I got the news it won a bronze award under the social issues category.

Honestly, I would not consider this to be my best work, but the issue here is bigger than fancy editing and great camera angles. The issue is the raw emotion of the human conscience and the healthcare crisis nurses witness first hand.

Video Podcast Advances to Nationals

About a week ago I posted a video that I directed and edited called What is a Nurse Scientist.

The backstory on that video:
Two PhD students asked me to help them create a video podcast. They wrote the script and I took care of all the video production and post production work. We then submitted the podcast to the Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science to compete at a regional level.

Earlier today, I found out the podcast won overall at regionals and will now advance to nationals. The regional prize is $1,000 and the national prize is $1,500.

March 3, 2008 the School of Nursing will hold their 6th annual Dream Makers Scholarship Fundraising Luncheon. This event has raised over $800,000 for BSN students. The Scholarships are distributed to the students in the name of the donor in $1,000 awards.

My role in this event will be to provide video support. While attendants arrive they will see this video I created.

The Society for Simulation in Healthcare will be holding their annual conference in San Diego.

The Society has accepted the Smart Hospital's Virtual Tour as a presentation piece. The virtual tour will be screened Tuesday Jan. 15th at the Marriott San Diego Hotel and Marina between 11 am & 12:30 pm.

Dr. Tiffany Holmes, the manager of the SH™, will represent UTA School Nursing in California.

Pinning Graduation Video

Every year the School of Nursing has 4 graduation ceremonies. All of which my department supports. We provide video support. It's a multi-camera set-up with live projection to 3 screens as well as live switching. We also make a video of memories that is screened during the ceremony. Every student receives a complimentary DVD, it's our way of saying we're proud of you. The video service we provide takes a small army to produce, but it's worth it.

Here is a few seconds of the intro to the RN to BSN graduation video. It will be screened at the Pinning Ceremony in Texas Hall, this Thursday.

Taking Pictures in a Controlled Environment

A few months ago, I had my heart set-on capturing a specific live action photo. The picture I wanted was of Dean Poster at the Smart Hospital's™ ribbon cutting ceremony. I envisioned a portrait of her with one hand in the air holding the ribbon. Well, when the time came the wind picked up and her hair went in every direction. The setting was a celebration/party with 200 plus people. People were everywhere--shaking hands, hugging, mingling, etc. So, even if the wind did die down (which it didn't), I still wouldn't have had the opportunity to ask her to pose.

That event was back in August and all this time I've been trying to meet with her to re-shoot the picture. This week I finally met with her to re-shoot the portrait, but this time in a controlled environment.

Sometimes, working out-in the field has it's disadvantages, but that's when you have to be creative and if it means re-staging a portrait then that's what you gotta do. In fact, I originally wanted to shoot in front of a screen so I could key out the background more effectively. Its funny how things work-out. Now I can put a relevant backdrop right behind her.

ExpoDisc Vs. Auto White Balance

My department invested in the ExpoDisc- a white balancing tool. It came in yesterday and these are the first few pictures I've managed to compare.

This disc just made my job a little easier. Now I can spend less time color correcting and more time taking pictures. I like getting the color temperture right the first time and if this ExpoDisc can help, I'll take it.

Intellectual Property

This past week I had a chance to attend UTA’s Technology Fair. The main subject of discussion was Intellectual Property. If not everyday, at least once a week, I deal with IP in my day-to-day work. On several occasions I've addressed and eased fear regarding copyright infringement in my office.

The main speakers were lawyers of University. So, faculty, staff, and students asked specific questions relating to copyright, fair use, trademarks, patents, etc. I’m fairly familiar with the general knowledge of these subjects, but it was a good reminder. The lawyers of the UT system were extremely helpful and reminded us they are on campus to aid, guide, and help us regarding these issues.

Lately I've been taking faculty and staff head shots. I had one of our work studies, Gina, sit in as I adjusted my lights and camera settings.

Sometimes, I fight with the white balance and so I'm looking into a new product, Expo Disc. I've used one before and the difference is dramatic, skin tones and highlights look more natural. I've tried customizing my white balance setting, but I should probably play with it more before I jump the gun and purchase an unnecessary product.

5 Rights of Medication: Rap Parody

I just wrapped up post production and here is the finished product.

This concept originated from Yung Joc's song, It's Going Down. Mohammed, a nursing student, changed the lyrics and pulled a "Weird Al" Yankovic on this rap tune. Because the song is a parody we are covered under copyright laws.

I don't always get to produce videos like this, but when I do it makes for an interesting work week.

Post Production for an Educational Music Video

A few weeks ago one of the nursing students, Mohammed, asked our department to help produce a music video to some rap music he had already recorded in the studio. So, yesterday I shot about 80% of the footage and last weekend he had a friend record some amateur exterior shots of him with a big group of people. By the end of the week, I'll post the finished product.

Smart Hospital™ Virtual Tour

This summer I created a virtual tour for the Smart Hospital™. Soon after, I started receiving request to convert the tour into a real video format because this original VT was created to be handled by an individual moving the mouse on the screen.

A perfect example of this request is when the Dean asked me to embed the VT in PowerPoint and set-up the tour to play like a video. She’s presenting in Washington and doesn’t want to rely on a Wi-Fi signal, since wireless can sometimes be unpredictable. So, in order to ease her concern, I converted the qtvr file into a true movie file then compressed it as an mpeg-1…because if you know anything about PowerPoint and QuickTime you know they don’t play nice together. Mpeg-1 was the best choice for file size, embedding options, and PC and Mac compatibility.

To produce this video I utilized Final Cut Suite, specifically, Final Cut Pro, Motion, and Soundtrack. I have extensive experience using Final Cut Pro, but this was my first experience using Motion.

When I’m out in the field, whether shooting stills or video, I’m typically at the mercy of my location. By that I mean, I have to use whatever light source is available. For this event I used “the houses” spotlights as my main light source and I was not disappointed. Using this light source and avoiding the camera flash resulted in great pictures.
